Signs, elements and modalities

A zodiac sign shows the manner in which a planet is expressed. The twelve signs divide into four elements (fire, earth, air, water) and three modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable). A tilt towards one group is called an emphasis, and a complete absence a lack.

What the zodiac signs are

The zodiac is a circle of 360° divided into twelve equal sectors of 30°. The circle is measured along the ecliptic — the Sun’s visible path across the sky over a year. A sign is a sector, not a constellation: constellations in the sky differ in size, while the sectors of the zodiac are equal. We use the tropical zodiac, in which the start of Aries is tied to the moment of the spring equinox.

When someone says “the Moon in Scorpio”, they mean that at the moment of birth the Moon was in the corresponding sector. The planet answers the question “what”, the sign answers “how”. The roles of the planets themselves are described in the article planets in the natal chart.

Take the theme of communication, which Mercury governs. In an air sign it sounds like curiosity and an easy exchange of ideas, in an earth sign like practicality and thoroughness, in a water sign like reliance on impressions and intuition, in a fire sign like speed and impulsiveness. The same Mercury, but a different manner.

The signs of the seven visible bodies — from the Sun to Saturn — and the signs of the Ascendant and Midheaven are read as personal. We do not count the signs of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as a personal trait: these planets stay in one sign for years, and it is shared by a whole generation.

The four elements

The element describes the general “material” of a sign — a way of feeling and responding. It is a simple classification, not a characterisation of the whole person.

The three modalities of the signs

The modality describes not the material but the way of acting over time: starting, sustaining or reshaping. Each modality has four signs — one from each element.

CardinalAries, Cancer, Libra, CapricornTo begin, to launch, to take the initiative
FixedTaurus, Leo, Scorpio, AquariusTo sustain, to see things through, to stay constant
MutableGemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, PiscesTo adapt, to reshape, to move from one thing to another

Together, the element and the modality identify a sign unambiguously: for example, Aries is cardinal fire, and Scorpio is fixed water.

The balance of elements and modalities

To see which elements and modalities predominate in a chart, we count eight points: the seven visible bodies (the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) and the Ascendant. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not included in the count, because their sign is shared by a generation.

  • Emphasis: at least four of the eight points in one element or one modality. Such a theme sounds more noticeably in the chart.
  • Lack: not a single point in an element or modality. This is not a deficiency in the person, but a description of a theme to which the person has to give attention consciously.
  • If there is neither an emphasis nor a lack, this is simply a more even distribution.

In the reading, an emphasis or lack of an element goes into chapter 1, “Personality and self-expression”, and an emphasis or lack of a modality into chapter 8, “Initiative and your own projects”. If the birth time is unknown, there is no Ascendant, and we do not turn this into a conclusion: the reading speaks only of what can be determined.

An example of counting

The example is fictional: the positions are invented to explain the idea and are not calculated from anyone’s data.

Earth has scored four of the eight points — this is an emphasis. Air has two points, water two, and fire none at all — this is a lack. By modality, fixed has three points, mutable three and cardinal two: there is neither an emphasis nor a lack.

This might be read as follows: in the hypothetical chart the theme of practicality and reliance on the tangible is noticeable, while fire — spontaneity and impulse — is present more weakly and may require conscious effort. This is a hypothesis for self-observation, not a sentence: the other factors of the chart may refine it.

What this is not

A sign is not a daily horoscope and not a forecast. A natal chart describes a person’s tendencies, and the elements and modalities are only one layer of such a description. How to combine it with the others is shown in the article how to read a natal chart. Astrology is a tradition of interpretation, not an exact science, and the results are worth checking against your own observations.
