Basics
The Sun, Moon and Ascendant
The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the three points from which a chart is usually read first. The Sun speaks of will and direction, the Moon of feelings and needs, the Ascendant of the manner in which a person enters something new. Together they give a first, most general portrait.
The Sun: direction and will
The Sun sign is the very “zodiac sign” that everyone knows. In interpretation the Sun describes what a person strives for, what gives them a sense of meaning and how they express their will. It is the conscious, “daytime” part of the personality.
The Sun sign is determined by the date and almost never depends on the birth time — except on days when the Sun moves into the next sign.
The Moon: feelings and needs
The Moon describes the emotional side: what a person needs in order to feel safe, how they react to stress, how they look after themselves and others. It is the more spontaneous, habitual part of the personality, often noticed by those close to the person before they notice it themselves.
The Moon moves fast and changes sign every two to three days. If the change fell on the day of birth, the Moon sign stays unknown without the time.
The Ascendant: manner and first impression
The Ascendant is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. In interpretation it describes the manner of behaving in new situations, the first impression a person makes and the habitual way of starting things.
The Ascendant passes through all twelve signs in a day, so it needs a birth time of good accuracy and the right place. If the time is unknown, there is no Ascendant in the chart — and we do not guess it. More in a chart without a birth time.
How to read them together
What matters is not three separate descriptions but how they combine. If all three points are in signs of similar character, the theme sounds whole and strong. If they differ, a person may look one way, feel another and strive towards a third — and this explains many inner contradictions.
The example is fictional: the positions were invented for explanation and are not calculated from anyone’s data.

| Point | Hypothetical example | How it may sound |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Taurus | Values stability, prefers the tried and tested, moves towards a goal gradually |
| Moon | Scorpio | Feels deeply, is in no hurry to open up, remembers grievances and attachments for a long time |
| Ascendant | Cancer | Enters something new cautiously, first takes a good look around and looks after their own |
Together this may read as follows: an outwardly calm and protective person with a strong, not always visible emotional life behind it, who makes decisions unhurriedly and for the long term. It is a hypothesis for self-observation, not a verdict: further factors in the chart may refine or soften it.
The trio in the full reading
The full reading includes all three points — along with the other planets, the aspects and, if the time is known, the houses; you can see what this looks like in the open sample. If the birth time is unknown, the reading says outright that the Ascendant is not determined and is built from what is known.
