Retrograde planets in the natal chart
Retrograde motion is the apparent movement of a planet backwards through the zodiac as seen from Earth. In a natal chart it is marked if the planet was retrograde at the moment of birth. We read it only for Mercury, Venus and Mars, and it is no cause for alarm.
What retrograde motion is
Planets do not turn around: they keep orbiting the Sun. But the Earth also moves along its own orbit, and in some periods it seems that a planet against the background of the zodiac slows down, stops and goes backwards. It is like your train overtaking another one: for a moment the other seems to be moving backwards. That is why we speak of an apparent, or visible, backward motion.
After a few weeks the planet stops again and returns to direct motion. The moments of reversal are called stations. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde.
Natal retrograde motion and “Mercury retrograde” in the news
These are two different things. When the news says “Mercury is retrograde now”, it refers to the planet’s current movement in the sky. In a natal chart something else matters: what the planet’s motion was at the moment of your birth. If at that moment Mercury was going “backwards”, it is retrograde in your chart, and this is its permanent feature in interpretation.
A current retrograde period and natal retrograde motion are not the same thing, and we do not mix them up. A natal chart describes tendencies, not a schedule of events; this article is only about the natal side of the question.
Why we read this only for Mercury, Venus and Mars
Retrograde motion of Mercury, Venus and Mars occurs for only some people and therefore tells charts apart. The outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — go backwards for long stretches every year, for several months, so very many people have them retrograde at the moment of birth. Such a feature says almost nothing about a particular person.
That is why the reading takes retrograde motion into account only for three planets. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde. The other bodies are read by sign, house and aspects; how the planets work in general is described in the article planets in the natal chart.
How it is interpreted and where it is in the reading
In the tradition, a retrograde planet expresses its theme in a more inward, less direct way and often calls for a return to what is already familiar. This is not a breakdown and not the worse option, but a different style.

- A tendency to think things over, double-check, return to thoughts; a decision takes longer to ripen

An example on a hypothetical chart
The example is fictional: the positions are invented to explain the idea and are not calculated from anyone’s data.
Suppose that in a hypothetical chart Mercury in Virgo is retrograde, while Venus and Mars are direct.
- Mercury in Virgo describes attentive, analytical thinking.
- Retrograde motion may add a tendency to double-check oneself and return to earlier thoughts before making a decision.
- Together this is a hypothesis for self-observation: decisions do not come at once, but are thought through carefully.
This description says nothing about ability or success: a person with Mercury retrograde does not think “worse”, but differently. Other factors of the chart may refine or soften this hypothesis, and how they fit together is shown in the article how to read a natal chart.
Without fear
Retrograde motion is often talked about anxiously, but in a natal chart it is simply one feature among others, on a par with sign, house and aspects. It does not cancel the planet’s abilities and does not predict failure. Many describe a retrograde planet as more “inward”: its theme develops at its own pace and often opens up to the person later than the rest.
Test the interpretation on yourself: if the description does not match your experience, that is normal. One feature does not define a person, and astrology remains an interpretation, not exact knowledge.
When retrograde motion is unknown
A planet changes its direction of motion at a station, and sometimes that is close to the moment of birth. If the motion manages to change within the possible discrepancy in the birth time, we do not guess and treat the retrograde motion as unknown. The rules on time accuracy are described in the section how we calculate, and the effect of an inexact time on other parts of the chart in the article a chart without a birth time.
The unknown does not turn into a negative conclusion: if the state is unclear, the reading says nothing about it. The absence of retrograde motion is also neither “worse” nor “better”. It describes a style, not a quality.
