Close relationships in the natal chart
The fifth chapter of the reading, “Close relationships”, describes your personal style of closeness: how you become attached, what you value in relationships, what you need and where your boundaries lie. It rests on Venus, the seventh and eighth houses and the aspects of Venus. It is not a compatibility calculation for two people and not a forecast of whom you will meet and when.
What the chapter “Close relationships” covers
The chapter is about one person — you. How you express affection, how you show care, what you consider important in closeness, how you relate to trust and commitment, what is hard for you. The chapter says nothing about a partner, because we have no couple calculation, and it does not name a “suitable sign”.
Astrology is a tradition of interpretation, not a science; the chapter serves as a prompt to ask yourself about your habitual style in relationships, not as instructions for choosing people.
Which chart factors it uses
| Factor | What it adds to the description |
|---|---|
| Venus sign | The manner of becoming attached and showing affection, taste, what a person values in those close to them |
| Bodies in the seventh house | One-to-one partnership: what a person expects from close and business partnerships and how they build them |
| Bodies in the eighth house | Deep bonds: trust, shared resources, readiness to open up |
| Aspects of Venus | Venus’s links with other planets: what supports or complicates closeness |
| Moon and Venus | How emotional needs fit with the style of attachment |
| Venus and Mars | How the wish for closeness and pressure or initiative combine with each other |
| Venus retrograde | If Venus appears to move backward at the moment of birth, in interpretation this is a more inward style of attachment that returns to itself |
The aspect of Venus with Mercury is not read here: it belongs to the chapter on communication. Houses are described in the article on houses in the natal chart, and retrograde motion in the article on retrograde planets.
How the factors combine
The Venus sign sets the main style: some show feelings through words and gifts, some through deeds and attention, some keep their distance until they are sure of reliability. The houses show where the theme is especially visible: the seventh in lasting partnerships, the eighth in depth and trust. Bodies in these houses add their own colours, but an empty seventh or eighth house denies nothing.
Aspects show how the style fits with the rest of the character. A link with the Moon speaks of agreement between what you feel and how you become attached; a link with Mars, of how warmth and pressure combine. A sextile and a trine are usually described as ease, a conjunction as a merging of two themes, a square and an opposition as tension that calls for a conscious choice. More in the article on aspects in the natal chart.
Contradictions are common here. Venus may speak of a wish for warmth and closeness, while an aspect speaks of a need for freedom. The chapter describes this as an inner theme: what you need and what at the same time frightens you. It is not a verdict of “relationships are hard for you”.
An example on a hypothetical chart
The example is fictional: the positions are invented to explain the idea, not calculated from anyone’s data.
- Venus in Virgo: affection is expressed through care, attention to detail and practical help.
- Venus retrograde: closeness is thought over, the person returns to their feelings and opens up gradually.
- Saturn in the seventh house: a serious attitude to partnerships, caution about commitments.
- Pluto in the eighth house: a need for deep, sincere closeness.
- Venus opposition Mars: the wish for closeness and the wish to act in one’s own way pull in different directions.
The chapter would describe the style: attentive, unhurried, preferring deeds to words. Then it would note two themes — caution before commitments and the intensity that the person seeks in deep bonds — and show that they can pull in different directions. For self-observation this is a question: when does reliability matter more to you, and when depth, and is it possible to have both?
This is a hypothesis, not a verdict. What such a chapter looks like in a finished reading can be seen in the open sample.
If the birth time is unknown
The Venus sign, its aspects and its retrograde status are usually known without the time as well, except in rare cases when something changes during the day. The seventh and eighth houses are unknown without the time, so the chapter says nothing about them and is built on what is available. More in the article on a chart without a birth time.
What this chapter does not claim
- It does not calculate compatibility of two people: we have no couple calculation, and the chapter does not say whether a particular person or sign suits you.
- It does not predict whether you will have relationships, when or with whom.
- It does not rate your relationships as successful or unsuccessful.
- It does not replace work with a psychologist or a family counsellor if relationships have become a source of pain.
- It draws no conclusion from an empty seventh or eighth house: it does not mean you do not need relationships.
What you can try
- How do you usually express affection: through words, actions, time, gifts? Does it match the description in the chapter?
- What is a signal for you that a person can be trusted? How much time do you need to open up?
- In which situations do you feel a boundary has been crossed, and how do you talk about it?
- If the chapter shows tension between closeness and freedom, how does it show up for you in practice?
