What is the Ascendant
The Ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In a reading it describes the manner in which a person enters new situations and the first impression they make. It is very sensitive to the time and place of birth, so without the time it can be neither calculated nor guessed.
What it is
Imagine the horizon of the place where you were born. The Earth rotates, and degrees of the zodiac rise continuously over its eastern part: first one, then the next. The degree that was rising at the moment of birth is the Ascendant, and the sign in which that degree lies is called the Ascendant sign, or the rising sign.
In a day all twelve signs pass over the horizon, that is, one sign every two hours on average. The speed depends on latitude: some signs rise faster, others more slowly. That is why two people born on the same day a few hours apart almost always have different Ascendants, even though they share a Sun sign.
The first house of the chart begins at the Ascendant, and the point opposite it is called the Descendant. More on both angles in the article on the angles of the natal chart.
What it describes in a reading
If in the traditional reading the Sun speaks of direction and will, and the Moon of feelings and needs, the Ascendant speaks of manner. It is how a person starts things, how they carry themselves on meeting someone, what is noticed about them in the first minutes of contact.
- The manner of entering something new: looking around cautiously, acting at once or first gathering information.
- The first impression: how a person looks from the outside and which qualities show before the others.
- The habitual way of starting: what a person usually does first with a task and how they react to the unexpected.
This is neither a “mask” nor the “real character”: no single point of the chart is the main one on its own. The Ascendant is read together with the Sun and the Moon, as shown in the article the Sun, Moon and Ascendant. The differences between the three points are exactly what explain many of the differences between how a person seems, what they feel and what they strive for.
Why it depends on time and place
On average the Ascendant shifts by 1° in about 4 minutes. A sign occupies 30°, that is, about two hours. An error of an hour in the time can carry the Ascendant into the neighbouring sign or leave it where it was: it all depends on how close to the sign boundary you were born.
The place matters no less. The same moment in universal time gives different Ascendants in Lisbon and in Vladivostok: their horizons are different. Even within one country, at the same local hour, the Ascendant may differ.
That is why we check the Ascendant over a time of ±2 minutes: if the sign changes over that span, it is treated as unknown. If the time is known approximately, the calculation is made at both ends of the span, and the Ascendant is named only when it is the same at both. What stays unknown and why is described in detail in the article a chart without a birth time.
The Ascendant and the houses are calculated only at latitudes from 66° north to 66° south: nearer the poles the Placidus system becomes unreliable. We take the birth place from the GeoNames directory, and convert local time to universal time by the historical rules of the time zone.
The chart ruler
The chart ruler is the planet that traditionally rules the Ascendant sign. We use only the traditional table: Aries — Mars, Taurus — Venus, Gemini — Mercury, Cancer — the Moon, Leo — the Sun, Virgo — Mercury, Libra — Venus, Scorpio — Mars, Sagittarius — Jupiter, Capricorn — Saturn, Aquarius — Saturn, Pisces — Jupiter.
Then we look at which house this planet stands in: it is considered that this is the area of life where a person most often shows the manner set by the Ascendant. This is one indicator, not a separate system of interpretation: we do not read the rulers of other houses. The chart ruler is used in the first chapter of the full reading, “Personality and self-expression”.
An example
The example is fictional: the positions were invented for explanation and are not calculated from anyone’s data.
- Factor
- Ascendant
- Hypothetical example
- Cancer
- How it may sound
- Enters something new cautiously, first takes a good look around, looks after their own and protects what is familiar
- Factor
- Chart ruler
- Hypothetical example
- The Moon (rules Cancer)
- How it may sound
- The manner is largely set by the emotional state and the sense of safety
- Factor
- House of the ruler
- Hypothetical example
- Sixth
- How it may sound
- This is especially noticeable in everyday affairs, habits, study and work
| Factor | Hypothetical example | How it may sound |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant | Cancer | Enters something new cautiously, first takes a good look around, looks after their own and protects what is familiar |
| Chart ruler | The Moon (rules Cancer) | The manner is largely set by the emotional state and the sense of safety |
| House of the ruler | Sixth | This is especially noticeable in everyday affairs, habits, study and work |
Together this may read as follows: a person who starts things unhurriedly and prefers a tried and tested order, and shows their caring manner above all in the daily routine. It is a hypothesis for self-observation, not a verdict: the Sun, the Moon, aspects and the other factors may refine or soften it.
What if the time is unknown
Then there is no Ascendant in the chart, and we will not guess it. There are no houses either, and no chart ruler, because it is determined precisely by the Ascendant sign. Everything else that does not need the time remains: the Sun sign, most planets, many aspects. An unknown factor does not become either a good or a bad conclusion: the reading simply says nothing about it.
We have no separate “Ascendant calculator”. The Ascendant is included in the full reading along with the rest of the chart as soon as the birth time (or a sufficiently narrow span) is known. You can see a sample in the open sample.
What next
The easiest way to find your Ascendant is to build a chart: if you remember the time only approximately, enter a span, and the site will show whether the sign can be named unambiguously. To understand how the Ascendant relates to the rest of the chart, read the article how to read a natal chart.
